For Love of Women: ZoCaLo Auction Dinner

Here is a story of love and respect for women.

Earlier this year, in The Charlottesville 29 Restaurant Auctions, each restaurant of The Charlottesville 29 offered up a once-in-a-lifetime dining experience to whoever pledged the largest donation to the Blue Ridge Area Food Bank. During the auctions, six friends and I joined forces to place a group bid on one of the experiences – ZoCaLo’s. Billing it as an “exclusive tasting menu,” ZoCaLo chef-owners Andrew Silver and Ivan Rekosh promised an array of special dishes, paired with wines and cocktails. “We have one goal,” they said. “To create the most memorable dining experience ever for the winner of this auction. No punches will be pulled, no expenses spared, no ingredient too luxurious.”

After some back-and-forth bidding, my friends and I were thrilled to win the dinner. Our plan, though, was not to enjoy the meal ourselves, but rather to give it to our wives as a ladies’ night out.

Last night, the ladies enjoyed their meal. And, boy did it live up to the hype. Eight courses, each expertly paired by Rekosh and Silver, who throughout the evening emerged from the kitchen to visit with the ladies and describe the dishes.

First came Wanno Oysters Three Ways, each with a different granita: jalepeno lime, cholula, and pickled onion. Pairing: Signet Rose Cava 2015.

Next was Georges Bank Scallop Ceviche, with red onion, jalapeno, tomato, cilantro, and avocado, served on plantain chips. Pairing: An Ancho Ocho Margarita my wife said was so delicious that it needs to go on the menu, pronto.

Third was Parsnip Soup with butter poached lobster and chives. Pairing: Nora Albarino 2014.

Then, Russett Potato Gnocchi in beurre fondue with maitake mushroom, topped with crispy serrano ham. Pairing: Catena Alta Chardonnay 2013.

Finally, Coconut Tres Leche Bread Pudding, with pasilla-vanilla ice cream and salted caramel.

Thanks to the extraordinary generosity of Rekosh, Silver, and ZoCalo, every penny of our $1,050 winning bid went directly to the food bank. That’s enough to provide more than 4,000 meals to the area’s hungry – all from one meal.

And, here’s thing: the ladies’ dinner was paid for by men, prepared by men, and served by men. And, it was cleaned up by men, too. All for women. This is not to say they could not have done it all themselves. These are seven smart, strong, independent, hard-working women. They don’t need men to do any of this for them.

But, we love them.

Five Finds on Friday: Chris Long

long

Today’s Five Finds on Friday come from Chris Long, the UVa football legend who now plays for the New England Patriots, but in the offseason still lives in Charlottesville, where he loves to enjoy our dining scene. Long has recently teamed up with Champion Brewing Company for Waterboys IPA to benefit Long’s charity Waterboys, whose mission is to bring life-sustaining water to East African communities that desperately need it. Watch this moving video to learn more. And then, donate here.

Saturday November 26, Champion is throwing a Release Party for the Waterboys IPA, with proceeds going directly to the charity. Details here. Long’s picks:

1) Cornmeal-crusted Fried Oysters at Maya. “Perfectly fried. The house remoulade makes it.”

2) Thick Cut Pork Chop at The Fitzroy. “The biggest, baddest pork chop in town. Get it with the roasted cauliflower.”

3) The Blaze at The Juice Laundry. “Perfectly spicy.”

4) Semisweet Chocolate Pot de Creme at Orzo.  “I’ve eaten three in one sitting and could’ve had more.”

5) Key Lime Free Range Chicken at ZoCaLo. “Longtime favorite.”

Five Finds on Friday: Kevin McElroy

Today’s Five Finds on Friday come from Kevin McElroy, Brewer and co-founder of Randow Row Brewing Co., the new brewery on Preston Ave. whose Grand Opening is today at 4:30 pm, with Moe’s Original BBQ food truck. Details here! A beer lover, McElroy went the extra mile and included a pairing with each of his picks.

1) Vella Jack Cheese Fritters and Black Bean and Corn Relleno at ZoCaLo. “The cheese fritters are crunchy on the outside and gooey on the inside, and come with an awesome raspberry chili sauce and I save the leftovers for the rest of the meal. Each time you get the relleno, the spice level of the pepper varies, so its a different experience each time. Beer pairing: Bell’s Two Hearted Ale to go with the spiciness of everything.”

2) Plain Bagel with Turkey and Veggie Cream Cheese at Bodo’s. “If I’m feeling adventurous I’ll add tomato and sprouts. Hands down the best bagel in Charlottesville.  With the brewery across the street, I eat plenty of meals here. Haven’t gotten tired of it yet. Beer pairing: all the beers at Random Row that I ‘have’ to test each day. Someone’s gotta do it.”

3) Cheese Pizza at Vita Nova. “Having two toddlers and a third baby on the way, I use the excuse that it’s for the kids, but Vita Nova is the best pizza in town for your money. Won’t break the bank and is a good New York style pizza with a creamy cheese topping. Beer pairing: Six pack of Hydraulion Red from Three Notch’d.”

4) Pulled Pork Sandwich with Fries at Ace Biscuit and BBQ. “As you can probably tell, I have a pretty simple palate. But the pork here doesn’t need much else. A dash of Carolina style sauce and it’s good to go. Beer pairing: PBR or Natty Boh.”

5) Red Hot Blues with “Wait a Minute” Hot Sauce at Continental Divide. “Just the right amount of heat to start your meal. Every entree I’ve had here I’ve been impressed with. Beer pairing: Sierra Nevada Pale ale, followed by one of the best margaritas in town!”
