Oakhart Social

Why Oakhart Social?

Impress your out-of-town guests from big cities with a trip to Oakhart Social. No Charlottesville restaurant better captures the ethos of great urban food neighborhoods, like Brooklyn’s Bushwick, Chicago’s West Loop, or D.C.’s H Street, to name a few, all proving that passion for food can be cool.

Oakhart Social is a ton of fun, with the best aspects of the new generation of urban food neighborhoods. There’s a barren, service station feel, with exposed white brick walls, and floors of reclaimed wood. There’s unpretentious service from folks who love to eat. There’s an ambitious bar with inventive drinks, good wine, and barrel-aged cocktails. And, there is unfussy, well-sourced food from a talented, passionate kitchen, headed by co-owner Tristan Wraight. It’s always belonged in The Charlottesville 29.

What to Order

The wife and muse of chef Wraight is a vegetarian, which means vegetables are an inspired choice here. But, Wraight himself is a devout omnivore, so meat-lovers will be happy, too. Much of the menu is small plates intended for sharing, and there are also larger dishes and even pizzas, with many of the best dishes coming from one of Charlottesville’s few wood-fired ovens, burning oak of course. Below are our picks, Wraight’s picks, and appearances in Five Finds on Friday, where a local chef or personality has named a dish from Oakhart Social as one of the best in town.

Our Picks

  • Shaved Salad

Mican

Mican112 W. Main St. #6 . Charlottesville, VA . (434) 977-0167
http://www.micancville.com/

Why Mican?

If there were just 29 restaurants in Charlottesville, at least one would need to serve sushi.  But which kind of sushi restaurant?  An affordable and reliable weekday joint like Kabuto? Or, a high-end, sophisticated restaurant for date night like TEN?

Mican makes the choice easier by offering the best of both worlds.  In the back of York Place on the downtown mall, it is like a downscale version of TEN.  This is no accident.  Chef-owner Yoshihiro Tauchi spent seven years as a sushi chef at TEN before opening his own restaurant in late 2013, then called Kokoro.  In 2015, a threatened trademark challenge forced a name change to Mican, but nothing else changed about the stellar restaurant that is affordable enough to be a regular takeout joint while also offering sophisticated Japanese dining worthy of a date night.

What to Order

Our favorite way to order is to allow Tauchi to order for us. Ask for an omakase meal, and the kitchen will send out a parade of tastes including both sushi and other dishes. For specific suggestions, below are our picks, Tauchi’s picks, and appearances in Five Finds on Friday, where a local chef or personality has named an item from Mican as one of the best in town.

Our Picks

  • Omakase Meal (not “omakase” from the sushi menu)
  • Sushi: Madai, Toro Tuna, Toro Salmon
  • Zucchini Blossom Tempura (seasonal)
  • Shiokara (not for the faint of palate)
  • Specials

Chef/Owner’s Picks

  • Spicy Miso Ramen
  • Tuna Tataki
  • Takoyaki
  • Sushi: Uni, Blue Fin Tuna, Toro Tuna

Fleurie

Fleurie108 3rd St. NE . Charlottesville, VA . (434) 971-7800
http://fleurierestaurant.com/

Why Fleurie?

Rumors of fine dining’s demise have been greatly exaggerated. Sure, there’s been a surge in downscale eats. All the while, though, chef-owner Brian Helleberg has sustained his serene temple of elevated French cuisine on the downtown mall, Fleurie.

How has Helleberg bucked the downscale trend? It’s not stubbornness. It’s passion. Having worked under such legends as Yannick Cam, Gerard Panguad, and Jean-Yves Schillinger, Helleberg loves everything about sophisticated French dining – the experience, the service, the presentation, and of course the food. Fleurie reflects Helleberg’s passion, remaining one of the few places in town where you can still dine on crisp, white table cloths, and where the servers are committed professionals. The food is exquisite, too, celebrating the attention to detail demanded by classic French cooking, with the kitchen’s own riffs. Jose De Brito’s return to the kitchen in 2023 makes the food as good as ever.

What to Order

Fleurie offers a daily three-course prix-fixe menu. Since it changes often, dish availability can vary. Below are our picks, Helleberg’s picks, and appearances in Five Finds on Friday, where a local chef or personality has named an item from Fleurie as one of the best in town.

Our Picks

  • Autumn Olive Farms’ Heritage Pork, Prepared Nose to Tail (2018 Dish of the Year)
  • Seared Foie Gras
  • Sautéed Skate
  • Dover Sole
  • Whole Poached Lobster
  • Lamb du Jour
  • Warm Chocolate Cake

Chef/Owner’s Picks

  • Sautéed Veal Sweetbreads with sunchokes, pickled pearl onions and veal jus
  • Lamb Carpaccio with haricots verts and shallot salad
  • Vanilla Mille Feulle with inverted puff pastry, candied orange and thyme
