Why The Clifton Inn?

No kitchen has trained more of Charlottesville’s top chefs than The Clifton Inn’s.  One former chef owns the C&O. Another co-owns Maya, while another founded The BBQ Exchange. And, others are scattered among the kitchens of great Charlottesville restaurants. It’s no wonder because, for twenty-five years, The Clifton Inn has been one of the area’s top fine dining destinations.

From the professional service, to the elegant and historic setting, to the stellar wine list, The Clifton Inn has become synonymous with special occasion dining. But, the star of the show is the food.  While the men and women who have served as The Clifton Inn’s Executive Chef over the years have varied in style and approach, they have all shared one thing: exceptional talent.  This is no less true of current chef Yannick Fayolle, who took over in 2015 and has continued the inn’s recent trend towards more progressive cuisine.  Whether for a drink on the beautiful verandah or an over-the-top meal, The Clifton Inn is Charlottesville’s signature destination for a luxurious night out.

What to Order

The most exciting place to dine at The Clifton Inn is the Chef’s Counter, a seven-seat marble bar inside the kitchen, with a front row view of all of the action.  There, the chefs themselves will serve a multi-course extravaganza of tastes of their favorite dishes, while chatting with the guests. As for the regular menu, it changes so often that specific dishes may be less helpful than suggested categories. Below is a list of our suggestions, the chef’s own favorites, and appearances in Five Finds on Friday, where a local chef or personality has named a Clifton Inn dish or experience as one of the best in town.

Why Duner’s?

After a turbulent two years, Duner’s landed on its feet. Though the longtime owner sold the restaurant in 2022, and its new owner passed away unexpectedly in 2023, the Charlottesville institution is now under the stewardship of chef-owner Christian Kelly. Few would be more capable of sustaining its legacy. With a background in fine dining at Clifton Inn and less fussy Southern fare at Maya, Kelly draws on both experiences to deliver the crowd-pleasing and refined cuisine that has attracted regulars to the Ivy icon for four decades. Long live Duner’s.

What to Order

The menu can change every day at Duner’s, and is conveniently posted online. Given the frequent changes, specific dish recommendations may be less helpful than suggested categories. Whatever you do, don’t skip dessert. One fixture at Duner’s has been Pastry Chef Linda Steiner, who has been with the restaurant since the 1990s. Below is a list of our suggestions and appearances in Five Finds on Friday, where a local chef or personality has named a Duner’s dish as one of the best in town.

Al Carbon

Al Carbon245 Merchant Walk Ave Suite 200 . Charlottesville, VA . (434) 284-5251

Why Al Carbon?

This order-at-the-counter joint specializes in whole chickens cooked over coals in a rotisserie oven imported from Peru. While the chickens are delicious, the Mexican dishes may be even better, which is no wonder given the heritage of owner Myriam Hernandez. In addition to great options for solo diners, the menu includes family meals like whole chickens with a selection of sides. Great for takeout, there are also tables for dining in, and bottled beers and cocktails to wash down the fiery food. With a quality-to-value ratio that is difficult to match, Al Carbon is on a short list of restaurants we would most wish to live near, and a fixture on The Charlottesville 29.

What to Order

From chicken to sandwiches to sides, it’s hard to go wrong at Al Carbon. Below is a list of our suggestions, Myriam’s own favorites, and appearances in Five Finds on Friday, where a local chef or personality has named an Al Carbon dish as one of the best in town.
