Charlottesville Restaurants Salute Amatrice

An Italian stamp honoring pasta all’Amatriciana

Amatrice is a small town with a big reputation. The signature dish of the ancient Italian town – pasta all’amatriciana – is world-renowned. While variations of the dish appear from time to time, the town itself insists that its sauce must always have just six ingredients: guanciale, pecorino cheese, chili, pepper, white wine and San Marzano tomatoes.

Sadly, Amatrice is “no more,” says Mayor Sergio Pirozzi. It was at the epicenter of an earthquake yesterday that destroyed more than 75% of the town. Amidst the devastation and rubble, one of the town’s only buildings still standing is a clock tower whose clock is frozen at the moment the earthquake hit. This comes just days before this weekend’s 50th annual spaghetti amatriciana festival was to be held in Amatrice.

Here in Charlottesville, restaurants are helping the cause by donating proceeds from pasta all’amatriciana to earthquake relief efforts.  Below is a list of participating restaurants. If any other restaurants wish to be added to the list, please let me know.

  • Lampo Neapolitan Pizzeria is running it as a special tonight through next Saturday (Aug. 25 – Sep. 3) for $12, with 100% of proceeds going to earthquake relief efforts.
  • Parallel 38 will offer the dish Friday through Sunday (Aug. 26-28), with 100% of proceeds going to earthquake relief efforts.
  • The Ivy Inn will serve “amatriciana americana” Friday through Thursday (Aug. 26 – Sep. 1) for $10, with 100% of proceeds going to earthquake relief efforts.
  • At Tavola, bucatini all’amatriciana has long been a menu staple, and tonight through September 10, a portion of proceeds from the dish will go to earthquake relief efforts.
  • Vivace will run the dish as a special side tonight through Thursday (Aug. 26 – Sep. 1) for $10, with 100% of proceeds going to earthquake relief efforts.
  • Orzo is running the dish as a special through September 4 for $20, with 50% of proceeds going to earthquake relief efforts.

Parallel 38 Auction Gets Even Better

The auction item for Parallel 38 is already extraordinary. With a wine class from an expert, an array of rare and special wines, and a tasting menu paired with wines, all for ten people, it is sure to be one of the most memorable dinners of the auction winner’s life. And, every penny goes straight to the food bank, which makes it guilt-free indulgence. Bidding ends today! Now, Parallel 38 co-owner Justin Ross has upped the ante by promising to enhance the benefit to the area’s hungry. Ross gets it. He wrote (emphasis added):

I hope everyone that wins one of the amazing auctions that The Charlottesville 29 is facilitating has the night of their lives. I hope all those who do bid but unfortunately do not end up winning enjoy the fun that an auction delivers. I also hope that everyone that read these posts, whether they chose to participate or not, saw another way to help our community. I hope that they observed local businesses coming together to help the surrounding community that ultimately supports our businesses. I hope it shows how important it is to make your neighborhood better than it was before you. Whether you choose to do so by supporting Literacy Volunteers of Charlottesville/Albemarle, Charlottesville-Albemarle SPCA, Blue Ridge Area Food Bank or any of the 1500 non profits in our area, you have have an impact on our community and make it a better place. For those of you that don’t know me, I own Parallel 38 and would like to see this auction item raise as much as possible for our area’s hungry. If Parallel’s auction hits/exceeds $2000 not only will we have helped provide 8,000+ meals but I will volunteer one hour at the Food Bank for every 100 meals our auction provides. At $2000 that would be 80 hours, at $3000 that would be 120 hours and it will continue with no cap. So please have a great meal with amazing wines, make an impact in your neighborhood and put me to work. It’s a WIN WIN WIN for everyone!

Parallel 38 Auction

Here is your chance to experience Parallel 38 like you never have experienced it before, while helping to feed the area’s hungry. It’s The Charlottesville 29 Restaurant Auctions, presented by McGuireWoods. Along with all of the other restaurants in The Charlottesville 29, Parallel 38 has created a signature experience available to whoever pledges the highest donation to The Blue Ridge Area Food Bank.  Parallel 38 is generously donating the entire experience, which means the winning bid goes directly to the food bank. Each dollar donated is enough to provide four meals to the area’s hungry. So, a winning bid of, say, $2,000 would mean not just a wonderful meal for the winner and their guests, but also 8,000 more meals for the area’s hungry.

Wine Class and Tasting Menu for Ten

The auction winner and nine guests will enjoy an evening of the two things for which Parallel 38 is known best: wine and food. Parallel 38 has the largest list of wines by the glass in town, with more than 100 selections carefully chosen by co-owner and certified Advanced Sommelier Justin Ross. The guests’ evening will begin with a wine seminar from Ross himself, covering a range of wines, including some from the restaurant’s very special “trophy” wine collection, which typically sell for $20-$70 per glass. Next, guests will enjoy a multi-course tasting menu, with each course paired with wines from the class. The tasting menu will include some of the Parallel 38 kitchen’s favorite dishes, plus a few off-menu surprises. Finally, an array of desserts will be served with a taste of the legendary Sauternes Chateau D’Yquem. A dream evening of incredible wine and food at Parallel 38.

Note: The winner will schedule the dinner with Parallel 38 at a mutually convenient time.
