Five Finds on Friday: Laura Fonner

Today’s Five Finds on Friday come Laura Fonner, the mother of four who recently resumed her former role as head chef at Duner’s, after several years catering. Famous for its lines, Duner’s now takes reservations(!) but only via Open Table, not by phone. Walk-ins always welcome, too. Fonner’s picks:

1)  Funghi Pizza at Lampo. “This dish is amazing because of its simplicity and perfection. What a great showcase for such amazing mushrooms. Paired with a bottle, yes I said bottle, of their Gossip Pinot Grigio, it’s a match made in heaven.”

2) Green Smoothie from Smojo. “Beth Harley has been running a smoothie truck for years but just recently moved into the Piedmont Place in Crozet. Her green smoothie is amazing. All of them are. I have four kids so anything quick and and easy is always my go-to. Her ingredients are organic and her combinations are unique and delicious.”

3) Brisket & Cheese Sandwich at Smoked Kitchen & Tap. “I live in Crozet and work in Ivy, so naturally I tend to stay in the area! Smoked finally opened up a brick and mortar location in Piedmont Place. Their meats are amazing. My inner fat kid is in love with their brisket and cheese sandwich with charred onions and Duke’s mayo on Texas toast. It is sloppy and full of flavor.”

4) Fried Oysters at The Whiskey Jar. “I am a sucker for fried oysters and these are wonderful. Perfectly flash fried so they are super juicy In the middle.”

5) BLT w/ Avocado on Everything at Bodo’s. “Like I said before, I have four kids, so I tend to eat places that don’t mind me bringing in a backpack of toys and sometimes screaming children. I have lived here my entire life and can’t imagine a better go-to than Bodo’s. Their bagels are consistently good! Their BLT is just great, add avocado and it’s even better. I’m also a sucker for their tabouli.”

5th Coach Joins Breakfast of Champions

rowing_kevinsauer

This week, one of the coaches attending tomorrow’s Breakfast of Champions, in The Charlottesville 29 Restaurant Auctions, noticed something was amiss. The event brings together four current UVa coaches who have won national championships – Brian Boland (men’s tennis), Brian O’Connor (baseball), George Gelnovatch (men’s soccer), and Julie Myers (women’s lacrosse) – for an over-the-top Bodo’s brunch with Potter’s Craft Cider and organic juice from Lumi. But, Myers noticed the inadvertent omission of the fifth current UVa coach to have won a national championship: Kevin Sauer, whose women’s rowing team won titles in 2010 and 2012.

Never mind. This is UVa after all. So, when he was extended a last minute invitation, Sauer of course said yes. Now, tomorrow’s event includes all current UVa coaches to have won national championships. Truly, a Breakfast of Champions. Congratulations to the auction winners and our thanks to them and the coaches for their support of the Blue Ridge Area Food Bank.

Attend Bodo’s Breakfast of Champions

Blue Moon 8

More than once I’ve heard The Charlottesville 29 Restaurant Auctions described as a gift that keeps on giving. Indeed, even after the bids created more than 315,000 meals for the area’s hungry, benefits have continued.

The latest example is the generosity of the team who won the auction for Bodo’s Breakfast of Champions – an over-the-top brunch for forty guests with four current UVa coaches with national titles in their sports: Brian Boland (men’s tennis), Brian O’Connor (baseball), George Gelnovatch (men’s soccer), and Julie Myers (women’s lacrosse).

With a bid of $2,400, Charlottesville resident David Weiss and friends won the auction. But, instead of filling the guest list solely with their friends, they’ve decided to make ten slots available to the general public in exchange for a minimum $50 donation to the Blue Ridge Area Food Bank. These donations will go on top of the one the winning group already made, meaning more money for the food bank and at least 2,000 more meals for the area’s hungry.

The brunch is Sunday, January 29, at 10 am at Weiss’ home. In addition to hobnobbing with NCAA champions, guests will enjoy a fabulous buffet of Bodo’s bagels, smoked salmon, spreads, and more, plus cider from Potter’s Craft Cider and organic juice from Lumi, including, of course, Wahoo Orange. Plus, acclaimed photographer Tom McGovern will be on hand to capture it all. Guests are even welcome to stay after the brunch to watch that day’s 1 pm televised men’s basketball game between UVa and defending national champions Villanova. A full day of champions.

The ten slots are available on a first-come, first-served basis and are sure to sell out fast. To book yours, email charlottesville29@gmail.com and state the amount of your donation, minimum $50. Good luck!
