Generosity Abounds in Citizen Auction

Charlottesville29_Cover_D1-01

2016 has brought so many unexpected challenges that some have asked for a do-over for the year. A temporal mulligan seems unlikely, though. An alternative way of coping, which does not require defying laws of physics, is simply to focus on the positive. At their core, most humans – especially here in Charlottesville – are fundamentally good. Lest anyone forget that truth, the The Charlottesville 29 Restaurant Auctions have offered constant reminders.

The latest came during bidding for the auction item from Citizen Burger Bar – “Burgers with Bronco” – where the winner and five guests will enjoy dinner at Citizen with UVa Football Coach Bronco Mendenhall and his staff. The item itself already involved the coalescence of generosity by many, many people. Citizen owner Andy McClure offered to cover the cost of the evening, including unlimited burgers, beverages, and service for a group that could number more than twenty guests. Coach Bronco Mendenhall and his entire coaching staff agreed to take time out of their busy schedules to support the cause. And, photographer Justin Ide volunteered to capture memories of the experience, including a photograph of the evening to be signed by Coach Mendenhall.

The auction ended today, and guess who won.

With a bid of $3,500, the winner of the Citizen Burger Bar auction is UVa Football’s second all-time leading tackler and his family: The Charles McDaniel Family. McDaniel played linebacker for UVa from 1982-1985, earning first team All-ACC and second-team All-American honors. His 432 takedowns are just three shy of Jamie Sharper’s career Cavalier record. In lieu of the NFL, however, McDaniel pursued a career in business, and now is President and CEO of Hilldrup Moving and Storage, a business known in its own right for the many ways it gives back to the communities it serves. The McDaniels’ victory in an auction for dinner with the Cavalier coaching staff is a reminder of how special the UVa family is.

But, the McDaniel family, it turns out, were not the only generous bidders in the Citizen auction. McDaniel prevailed only after furious back-and-forth bidding overnight with runner-up Brad Lucas, a 1997 UVa graduate who is now a partner in the D.C. office of law firm Fried Frank. Coming that close to a prized dinner with Coach Mendenhall might leave some folks disappointed. But, not Lucas. After bowing out of bidding this morning, instead of taking his football and going home, Lucas pledged to make a donation to the food bank anyway. Together with McDaniel’s $3,500 donation, the additional $500 that Lucas volunteered will create more than 16,000 meals for the area’s hungry.

See. The world is not so bad.

Here is your chance to experience Citizen Burger Bar like you never have experienced it before, while helping to feed the area’s hungry. It’s The Charlottesville 29 Restaurant Auctions, presented by McGuireWoods. Along with all of the other restaurants in The Charlottesville 29, Citizen has created a signature experience available to whoever pledges the highest donation to The Blue Ridge Area Food Bank. Citizen is generously donating the entire experience, which means the winning bid goes directly to the food bank. Each dollar donated is enough to provide four meals to the area’s hungry.  So, a winning bid of, say, $5,000 would mean not just a wonderful meal for the winner and their guests, but also 20,000 more meals for the area’s hungry.

The Citizen signature experience for The Charlottesville 29 Restaurant Auctions:

Burgers with Bronco

There is no better place in town to watch football than Citizen Burger Bar. And, it’s a great place to talk football, too. The auction winner and five guests will enjoy dinner with special guest UVa Football Coach Bronco Mendenhall and his entire coaching staff. Help yourselves to as many burgers and beverages as you like while getting up close and personal with Coach Mendenhall and his staff. To preserve the memories of this dream meal for a lucky Hoo fan, acclaimed photographer Justin Ide will capture images of it all, including an 11 x 14 group shot of the auction winners and coaches, signed by Bronco Mendenhall. As if that’s not enough, Coach Mendenhall will bring the auction winner a football, personally signed to commemorate the evening. It’s a once-in-a-lifetime experience for the ultimate UVa football fan.

Note: The auction winner will schedule the dinner at a time that is mutually convenient for Citizen and the coaching staff. NCAA rules prohibit anyone under the age of 25 from attending the dinner.

Five Finds on Friday: Merrill Robertson

Merrill

Today’s Five Finds on Friday come from Merrill Robertson, the Culinary Institute of America alum who, with her husband Peter, runs the outstanding food truck Côte-Rôtie. The truck will be at Champion Brewing Company tonight and this Sunday. Robertson’s picks:

1) Double Bacon Cheesburger at Riverside Lunch.  “No shame in walking in there at 11 am on a day off after a long hike with the dog, and having a couple of ice-cold Full Nelsons and a double bacon cheeseburger with fries. The friendliest, sweetest people run that establishment. Best burger in this town hands down.”

2) Blanc de Blanc from Thibaut-Janisson. “Great value and well-made. On par with true Champagne.”

3) Shrimp Po’Boy from SpiceSea Gourmet. “Perfectly fried shrimp, spicy house-made aioli, and fresh greens. A winner.”

4)  Whatever David Pours at Citizen Burger Bar. “Friendly, very knowledgeable about beers, and fun to chat with at the bar.”

5)  Turkey, Havarti, Sprouts, and House Dressing at Take it Away. “Any sandwich with their house dressing is addictive. A spot I would always hit up while visiting Charlottesville prior to moving here.”
