It’s not often a new restaurant knocks the socks off Charlottesville chefs, but ever since Smyrna opened in 2022, it has done just that. Drawing on a background in elite Manhattan kitchens, chef Tarik Sengul came to Charlottesville and applied his classical training to the cuisine of his native Turkey. The result is something Charlottesville has never seen before: refined Aegean cooking.
Sengul’s business partner Orhun Dikmen, who once helped his brother run nearby Sultan Kebab, ensures that the front-of-the-house experience does justice to the food. Polished service, well-curated drinks, and an attractive setting make for one of the best all-around restaurant experiences in town. There is no question that Smyrna belongs in The Charlottesville 29.
What to Order
Sengul’s attention to detail yields one of Charlottesville’ most consistent menus. If a menu item appeals to you, order it. Below is a list of our suggestions and appearances in Five Finds on Friday, where a local chef or personality has named a Smyrna dish as one of the best in town.
