We are deeply saddened to announce that, due to the threat posed by COVID-19, we are  halting on-site service at our restaurants. For some of us, this will mean temporary closures, while for others it will mean shifting to a model of solely takeout or delivery.

This decision is heart-breaking. We all entered this industry because of our passion to care for people. The change in operations will prevent us from caring for our guests and staff in the same manner that we have always enjoyed. But, for the time being, we have come to realize that the best way for us to care for people is to reduce the temptation for them to congregate, and thereby slow the spread of a virus that threatens our community.

Our hope is that circumstances will soon allow us to resume normal operations without the risk of spreading a pandemic. When that time comes, rest assured that we will return as passionate as ever to serve you.

Yesterday, we launched the Gift Card Program as a way for diners to bring temporary cash flow to Charlottesville restaurants to help them survive the great threat that COVID-19 poses. That threat exists not just for restaurants themselves, but also for their staff, many of whom rely on wages and gratuities just to make ends meet.

Out of concern for their staff, Ivy Inn has announced that 100% of its proceeds from the Gift Card Program will go directly to their staff. More than twenty years after coming to Charlottesville to take over Ivy Inn, Angelo and Farrell Vangelopoulos continue to be leaders in our food community. We are lucky to have them.

Charlottesville restaurants are in peril. They need your help.

In the food industry, margins are so tight that most restaurants cannot surive any sustained sharp drop in business. The devastating effects of COVID-19 upon restaurant business will be unprecedented. Fortunately, to compensate for those effects, some Charlottesville landlords and suppliers are showing flexibility on payment deadlines, in an effort to help restaurants somehow stay afloat. But, it is not enough. Restaurants cannot survive without your help.

While Charlottesville Restaurants are implementing precautions against the spread of COVID-19 and encourage diners to keep visiting, fears suppress business.

You can help restaurants survive this crisis. How? By purchasing gift cards. Buy as many you can for as many restaurants as you can. For regular favorites that you plan to visit anyway, this will literally cost you no money. You are merely paying now for a check you would have to pay later anyway. So, for example, buy a $500 gift certificate now, and then use it all year long. Without needed cash flow, your favorites might not still be around.
