The Charlottesville 29

If there were just 29 restaurants in Charlottesville, what would be the ideal 29?

Pad Thai Auction

Pad Thai

Here is your chance to experience Pad Thai like you never have experienced it before, while helping to feed the area’s hungry. It’s The Charlottesville 29 Restaurant Auctions, presented by McGuireWoods. Along with all of the other restaurants in The Charlottesville 29, Pad Thai has created a signature experience available to whoever pledges the highest donation to The Blue Ridge Area Food Bank. Pad Thai is generously donating the entire experience, which means the winning bid goes directly to the food bank, and each dollar donated is enough to provide four meals to the area’s hungry. So, a winning bid of, say, $1,000 would mean not just a wonderful meal for the winner and their guests, but also 4,000 more meals for the area’s hungry.

The Pad Thai signature experience for The Charlottesville 29 Restaurant Auctions:

Thai “Street Food” Feast

Pad Thai’s owners, Santi and Utaiwan Ouypron, once ran an eatery out of their home in Thailand. For the auction winner, the Ouyprons are dialing it all the way back to their childhoods. The winner and seven guests will have the entire restaurant to themselves for a feast of traditional, local foods the Ouyprons enjoyed growing up in Thailand. Utaiwan is from Northern Thailand and Santi is from the city, and the feast will draw on both heritages.

Though the Ouyprons have not finalized the menu, it will pull no punches, with fish served whole and less common cuts of meat, such as possibly tongue, tail, pork knuckle, snout, or liver.  “My parents will cook their hearts out,” says the Ouypron’s son Jay. So, be prepared for an unforgettable experience – a rare treat to sample the real local foods of Thailand.

To wash down it all, guests may enjoy as much beer as they’d like from one of the best draught lists in town, or, if they prefer, house wines

Note: The auction winner will schedule the feast on a mutually convenient Sunday, when Pad Thai is otherwise closed.

Bidding for the Pad Thai auction ended on June 26.

Winning Bid: $1,100

Five Finds on Friday: John Shanesy

John

On Fridays, we feature five food finds selected by local chefs and personalities. Today’s picks come from John Shanesy, the new Chef de Cuisine at Charlottesville 29 inductee Parallel 38, which has just updated its menu with handmade pastas, flatbread pizzas, and more.  A former sous chef of The Blue Light Grill, Shanesy has also spent time at Paradox Pastry, as well as Charlottesville 29 inductees MAS Tapas and The BBQ Exchange. Shanesy’s picks:

1)  Pulled Pork Sandwich with Garlic Pickles, Hog Fire and Napalm Sauce at The BBQ Exchange.  “Craig’s passion for food and cooking is something very contagious and it’s obvious why his restaurant is such a hit.”

2)  Thai Beef Consommé at Pad Thai.  “Perfect mix of hot, comfort and clean flavors put together in one bowl by Mr. Ouypron!”

3)  Chorizo Tacos Traditional Style with Whiskey at Yearbook Taco.  “John’s cooking is wonderful, and he was a wonderful teacher of mine. I love his food and it’s especially good when Ross Schiller is putting bourbon in me.”

4)  Bellisima Pizza at Dr. Ho’s Humble Pie.  “Best ingredients, best dough, best sauce, best atmosphere! What else can you say!”

5)  OH Toro at TEN.  “Pei Chang does no wrong at his incredible Japanese restaurant on the downtown mall. The decor is so inviting and the quality of staff and food is at the highest level that this town has to offer. Absolutely wonderful!”

Five Finds on Friday: Ben Jordan

Jordan

On Fridays, we feature five food finds from local chefs and personalities.  This week’s picks come from Ben Jordan, winemaker and general manager of Michael Shaps Wineworks, which has just launched a brand new tasting room and also introduced wine growlers, a great new way to buy wine.  Jordan also has his own side project in aromatised wines and bitters, and has bottled the cult-favorite War & Rust.  Jordan’s picks:

1)  Grandpa’s Favorite at Pad Thai.  “Fried catfish, fried rice, and an omelette was a new combination for me, but now I have to work not to order it every time.”

2)  Dealer’s Choice at The Alley Light.  “The option of drinking-off-menu taps into the creative energy behind the bar, always a fun way to drink.”

3)  Sunday Lunch and Brunch at The Shack.  “I grew up in Augusta County, and it’s great to be able to stop in for the biscuits and gravy or the fried quail on the way to visit family. And, the drive to Staunton is shorter than some brunch lines.”

4) Dry-Aged Burger Grind at JM Stock Provisions.  “We make thin patties with this, and there is so much flavor that they work as simple burgers, without much need for adornment.”

5)  First Three Cheese Suggestions at Flora Artisanal Cheese.  “My strategy is to walk in, say something vague about what I want, taste what Nadjeeb offers, find it delicious, and then buy it.”
